Hot House: Classic colonial Roland Park residence on desirable street. 6 beds/5 baths. 4,904 square feet. Asking price: $1,299,000.

What: Somerset Road is one of the most distinguished roads in Roland Park with a wide variety of houses in many classical styles. The house at 502 Somerset Road is a classic colonial, with all of the features that distinguish that style: two to three stories with a rectangular or square shape; a gabled roof and dormer windows; door in the exact center of the home and the same number of windows on either side of the door; decorative crown over the front door supported by pillars or columns; and grand entrances that lead into living areas.

This house is filled with countless beautiful architectural details including copious crown moldings, numerous columns, leaded glass windows, hardwood floors and even a turret! As you enter through the beautiful front door with its leaded fanlight, you come into a large center hall, featuring classically elegant, fluted Doric columns. The open living room with its fireplace is to the right, and the space continues with a window-filled sunporch with a classic black and white floor. Behind the living room is a large family room with its own fireplace.

Unusually, the kitchen is just off the entry hall, behind a set of multi-paned French doors. The newly renovated kitchen with quartz counters, a large island and GE stainless steel appliances opens to dining room, which retains the original servants’ bell box. Adjacent to the dining room is an oversize pantry, back staircase and mudroom.

One of the distinguishing features of the home is a turret which houses a small, charming entryway with diamond-paned, leaded-glass windows and the house’s elegant, curved staircase which rises to all three floors.

There are three bedrooms, including the primary bedroom, and two full bathrooms on the second floor. Both of the bathrooms have been updated with Carrera marble and Kohler fixtures. The primary bathroom also has heated floors and large walk-in closet. The third floor has three bedrooms/office, plus two full baths, a storage area and another walk-in closet. A second “servants” staircase connects all three floors.

The house features off-street parking for several cars, as well as a one-car garage on the property. The back yard is level, perfect for a game of pick-up lacrosse, and there’s also a stone patio adjacent to the house.

Where: Somerset is on the southern end of Roland Park, and is a five-minute walk, or an even shorter drive to the shops and services at the Rotunda. The library, schools and Starbucks is just a mile or so north on Roland Avenue. It’s an easy drive to get to the JFX. Somerset is a very quiet street.

Final Appraisal: Somerset is one of the less well-known streets in Roland Park as it originates from the “corner” of Roland Avenue and University Parkway, and is one-way for part of its length. The houses along Somerset date from the earliest years of the 1900s, and feature a wide range of architectural styles. Some of the most beautiful houses in Baltimore are along Somerset Road.
